Ramsbury Scouts Commemorate Remembrance Sunday with Village Procession

Updated: Nov 11, 2024

On Remembrance Sunday, the Ramsbury Scout Group came together with the local community to honour the brave men and women who served and sacrificed in past conflicts. In a moving procession, Scouts, Cubs, and Beavers, alongside community members, gathered in The Square to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom.

The event began with Scouts assembling in The Square, guided by leaders and organized with great care by Group Scout Leader Mike Allman. Each young member, neatly dressed in uniform, stood alongside representatives from the parish council, fire and rescue service, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Army, and Royal Marines—many displaying medals of service and sacrifice. Lieutenant Colonel Phil Oram, in a solemn inspection, moved through the rows, acknowledging the Scouts and other dignitaries before leading the march toward the Memorial Hall.

As the group set off, the sounds of the Ramsbury band accompanied them, filling the village with traditional melodies that reverberated through the streets. The procession, followed by more than 100 residents, symbolized a deep sense of community unity and shared respect for those who served. Along the route, villagers gathered in solidarity, their presence a testament to the enduring gratitude felt within Ramsbury.

At the memorial, wreaths were laid by community leaders and representatives of each Scout group—Scouts, Cubs, and Beavers—forming a touching tribute to those who paid the ultimate price. The haunting notes of the Last Post then played, casting a reflective silence over the crowd as they honoured the fallen. After two minutes of silence, the Reveille sounded, marking the end of this moment of remembrance and allowing for quiet contemplation of the sacrifices remembered on this day.

Following the ceremony, many gathered at the Holy Cross Church to attend the Remembrance Day service, offering prayers and reflections on the bravery and commitment of our armed forces.

Heartfelt thanks go to the leaders who organized the Scouts, Cubs, and Beavers, who all presented themselves with the utmost respect and honour. Thanks also to the Ramsbury community, whose presence underscored the strength of our collective remembrance. Remembrance Sunday serves as a reminder to all generations of the courage and selflessness shown by so many, and Ramsbury’s Scout Group is proud to continue commemorating this important day.
